Cherish Christmas – Workshop in Decorations Making
It’s not often that children in poor areas get the chance to really explore and use their imagination in creating something with their own two hands. Most often they are lingered with worries about tomorrow and making it by each day, making little room for fun and educational activities. That is why we decided to hold a workshop in decoration making as part of the Cherish Christmas celebration.
It was on December 14 that about 50 children, all whom will be attending the Cherish Christmas Children’s Party on December 21, were given the chance to improve their skills in creating Christmas decorations. The children were assigned to particular groups according to age, and in depending on the various groups they were taught how to make Styrofoam snowmen, paper plate ornaments, Christmas lanterns and Christmas baskets.
It truly was amazing witnessing the eagerness and enthusiasm of the children as they were playing with glue, paint, Styrofoam balls, cartolina and glitter – all trying to design their very own and special decorations. The end result was that no two decorations were the same – despite of the fact that they all followed the same “mold and recipe” in their groups. It seemed as if the activity helped stimulate their thinking, and strengthen their motivation and self-esteem.
The children were able to hand in their decorations for judging after the activity, and the winners are to be announces at the Christmas Party on December 21.
